How To Be Street Smart

By Emily Merrifield

I’m lucky enough to live in one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. I’m absolutely obsessed with Barcelona, and this city has gotten under my skin much faster than I could have ever anticipated. Barcelona has everything I could have asked for: gorgeous beaches, killer nightlife, music, and beautiful architecture. However, like every city, it is best to be prepared and street smart.

Here are a few helpful tips on how to avoid having a really bad day in Barcelona, or any other European city. I know a lot of these are fairly obvious, but I figured I’ll cover all of the bases…

1. Always make sure your purse is in front of you, with the zipper facing forward. If you can, try to disperse your valuables in different pockets, rather than having everything that’s important in one spot.
2. Purses that sling across your body rather than your shoulder are always a good idea. They’re easier to carry, and harder for someone to snatch!

3. Be especially careful on the metro. If you’re wearing a backpack with anything valuable, risk looking incredibly goofy and wear it in front of you, and know where your zippers are.
4. If someone comes running up behind you asking if you lost a ring, just ignore them: you didn’t lose anything, they’re just trying to distract you. You’re too smart to bring nice jewelry to Europe anyway.

Keep these tips in the back of your mind and your belongings will remain safe and sound!
