Shamrocks, Guinness and Irish Whiskey

By Tori vanSambeck

St. Patricks day is coming up and if the luck of the Irish is upon you then you’ll be celebrating with good friends, shamrocks and plenty of Guinness. If you happen to be in Ireland on March 17th then lucky you! Dublin is the best place to be for the holiday. The Irish celebrate the day with a massive parade, street perfomances, Irish dancing and music. As it gets darker the city completes the day by lighting up many of its famous monuments green.

If you’re not in Dublin, then no worries! Ireland isn’t the only place to celebrate. London has an amazing parade and throws a great party with plenty of shamrocks and live entertainment. The city also has a ton of Irish pubs to enjoy some Irish whiskey and beer. In Spain, there is a traditional Irish regatta where there will be boat races complete with Irish music and dancing. Copenhagen celebrates by lighting up their famous mermaid statue green and holding a three legged race that is hosted by Carlsberg.

Going to be in Italy for the big day? No worries, the Italians love any excuse for a festival and St. Patricks day is celebrated in Italy as well. If you’re in Rome hit up one of the Irish pubs like Abbey Theater or Scholars for a good time. And if you’re in Florence you’re in luck!  March 17th through March 22nd, Florence honors the patron saint of Ireland with a ‘Festa Irlandese,’ or Irish Festival. The festival consists of pub crawls, live music, and beer.   Any bar will be celebrating the big day, but head to Finnegan’s if you want an authentic Irish pub experience. Sláinte! :)
