Locals We Love: Massimo

Everyone loves leather, but especially in Florence, Italy. Meet our favorite leather local Massimo and learn about his love for leather!

Where are you from?

I’m from Tehran, Persia, but I’ve lived in Italy for 27 years now.

How did you get into the leather business?

As a student I worked with various leather owners around the city learning the ropes of the business. I fell in love with leather and spoke 6 languages, so I knew I wanted to open a shop in the city one day. After working as a student I started partnerships for over 3 years before I opened my leather stand and shop in Florence.

When did you open your shop?

I opened my first shop in 2001. After doing well with my first shop I opened my second shop next-door 7 years later, so 2008.

How can you tell fake leather from real leather?

The easiest way to tell the difference is that fake leather is perfect looking. It never has the suede and vein look that real leather does. You can also use fire to distinguish fake leather from real leather. Fire won’t burn real leather but it would fake leather.

Are there any big leather trends we should look out for?

Leather is always a trend and always in style, that’s why I love it!

Do you ever go to the states for business?

I’ve never been to the states, but a lot of my customers are from the states.

What’s your favorite part about your job?

My favorite part is the satisfaction that comes from selling people good quality leather at the best prices. I love seeing people leave happy and building relationships with my customers. I truly care for the people that shop in my store and feel honored to be part of the leather business.
